Yup, just at that year begun the Chichimec War, a mainly guerrilla conflict with very few "big" battles that went from 1550 to 1580 (some says that it endure to 1600). 

It was the last resistance from the "northern barbarians Chichimecas", a bunch of peoples from the north of Mexico and the South of the Great Plains (also known as Aridamérica).

At the end, the indians surrender because it was easier to pretend being civilized than living a nomadic life. They did as if were being christianized while putting their own idols just behind the catholic saints. And the politics of "presidios", a kind of strongholds to protect the main mining roads made harder the pillaging and guerrilla warfare. The last free indians were the Xi'oi and the Tepehuanes, that became christians but never leaved the mountains.
